There are differences in the power amplifier feedback between the
balanced and unbalanced amplifiers. I assumed they sounded the same,
but maybe this is not the case. Anybody know?

One bought from a private individual or consignment shop ought to be
much cheaper than one bought from a rebuilder. I bought a 145 in
excellent condition w/preamp that was on consignment in a music store
here in town for $400. The local rebuilder charges $875 and up for
145s, depending on condition.
A 302/322 might be a good choice. Mark sez he paid $1050 US for his
new one.
