^Groove^ is also a "short" mailing list. If you want to exchange comments on artists, e-mail me and I will summarize it and forward it to everyone "subscribed", as well as include it in the WWW page. Here's my latest update: This month's Downbeat magazine has a feature article "B-3 Jammin' with Jimmy Smith." Interesting insights. Groove and McGriff used to be pupils of Smith's and would hide secrets from each other ... According to Smith, they would wake him up in the morning. As a boy/teen, Smith would get to Bud Powell's home before he got up, and was allowed to go there until he got too good! He even played a Charlie Parker gig one night (of many it seems) Powell was late. "Make Way For The Originals" is the name of a tour organized by Russ Dewbury (according to Straight No Chaser Winter '94) which features: Pucho (percussion), Melvin Sparks (guitar), Johnny Lytle (vibes), Reuben Wilson (organ) and Idris Muhammad (drums). Beat Goes Public has reissued albums from all these artists except Wilson. Oberheim makes a "Piano & Organ, to go": the OB-3. A flat portable keyboard with a separate console with drawbars and presets. It even has "key click", a "feature" originally considered to be a drawback in design, but was found lacking when it was "corrected" by later designs. Haven't heard the sound, so can't say if it sounds like the real thing, or if you can get the "real" B-3 sound without Leslies. [Any insight from you here would be greatly appreciated!] The update also had info on the XB-3 plus some new artist info which was already incorporated into ^Groove^, which I just sent. All comments/suggestions are welcome, and will receive proper credit. Please keep flames polite, this is my initial attempt, and it is unpolished at best. Gilles
