There has been some interest expressed in someone creating a circuit or
devising a modification to a volume pedal for clone users that will
duplicate the frequency varying nature of a B3 style preamp. To this
goal, I measured the frequency response of a B3 preamp as a function of
swell pedal position. The input signal was injected into the "A" input
(non-vibrato). 33k ohm was placed across the "G" outputs and the output
signal was measured from ground to one of the "G" outputs.
The plots are shown normalized to the gain at 1kHz with the swell pedal
at maximum. The tone control is set at maximum and the gain adjust
inside the swell can was set such that the tone generator output levels
were the values listed in the shop manual. The volume rocker switch was
set to maximum.
What is apparent from the plots is that the frequency response doesn't
change much as the gain is reduced to -6dB at about the half pedal
travel point. As gain is reduced further, the gain is about -8 dB at
around 50 Hz, even at the min gain position. It looks like a loudness
type control.
Some caveats:
- The response shown in the plots at minimum gain may be noise limited
in my test setup. That is, there may be more attenuation then i've shown
here - i expect my test setup was noise floor limited.
- I don't know whether this response is typical of all preamps.
