You're right Mark--There are things "sneaking around" above the almost 6K
top tonewheel frequency in my C-3 and every tonewheel generator HAMMOND. It
is generally NOT program information (audio from the organ) but natural key
click noise and other noise in the audio spectrum. If you really want to
hear this unfiltered, hook the organ preamp output ("G" terminal through a
10K pot and ground on the back of the preamp tied into a 1/4" jack) to a
mixer set flat with a good amp and speakers. You'll hear the high-end clatter
and noise that the factory purposely tried to reduce by mellowing out the
Leslie amps and the old HAMMOND tone cabinet amps. Lots of tone shaping was
deliberately designed into the tube and solid-state preamps, and the Leslie
tube amplifiers due to this and other noise factors! Ever wonder why a 122
is more mellow than a 147? It's by design.
My C3 has two separate tracking keyboard inputs / outputs. I have one
assigned to the Leslie 122 input, and what go in comes out! The Leslie amp
did it's own thing to the XB-2 output, hence the very minimal "synthesis"
Mark described. Now you see why we realign our XB-2's against a tonewheel
generator organ and Leslie. Mark's XB-2 was very close to the C-3's sound
when used in the same Leslie! Any HAMMOND-clone should be able to do the
same thing in an A / B test.
As info--- During the PRO-3 testing Mark and Will set up all of the wiring,
did all of the playing, and mixed and matched equipment as they wished. I
did not interfere except to answer questions and add some comments to the
group. I admit I DID order the pizza from Dominos. Mark and Will even
completely unboxed the brand-new XC-3.
Not as good as of unboxing hundreds of brand new B-3's, C-3's and every other
model HAMMOND and Leslie from the mid-60's, 70's and even into the early
80's. Dad brought Bill and I to the store on weekends to work, plus weekdays
during the summer.
