(Just to add more to the stew), I spoke with Jerry Welch (Organ
Service Co.) about this. He sez that over oiling can cause the same
malady in the scanner as dendrite formation, though the dendrite
formation is the worse of the two. (Dendrite is my word/fault - not
his). In the case of over oiling the scanner, the oil saturates/coats
the insulators and picks up impurites, (could be some of the
conductive dendrite material/powder floating around) and shorts out
stator poles.

It looks the over oiling is a definite aggravating factor.
