or simply insert a power-resistor in series with what
would be the common cathode of the 6X4 replacement 
(dual power diode if I remember right). shouldn't be
too hard to calculate the required value (resistance
and power), especially if it's currently working with
the tube in place.  in fact, you can probably even buy
a packaged 6X4 replacement that already includes the
necessary dropping resistor.  check back pages of
ham magazines like QST.
