I saw Jimmy McGriff in Harrisburg, PA this last November & it sounds like
the same setup that Mark saw in Boston, right down to the 2 Leslies. And yes
he had that #%*@~$+#!!! GM-1000 synth module in the XB-3 here too. Other than
a
private letter to another member of this user's group I didn't post anything
about it, but I have to agree w/ what Mark politely understated in his
posting; it was extremely annoying, especially as the night went on & it was
used again & again. He also did only one song in Harrisburg on which he
didn't use it ("I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause" in this case). The band
really epitomized the concept of the B-3 combo in that they swung like there
was no tomorrow, and thier use of dynamics was a master lesson in itself. I
hadn't heard of the guitar player before. His name was Wayne Boyd and he had
a great tone & seamless style that blended in just perfectly w/ the group, so
he deserves special mention here. Since Al Goff had mentioned in one of his
postings that Jimmy uses a Goff
rig, I hope this is just a phase he's going through because he's such a great
player he doesn't need those bells & whistles. They end up really detracting
from the whole thing. But I don't want this to sound like a McGriff flame. I
think he's a really great artist & I have tremendous respect for him. I just
hope that next time I see him it's a purely "Hammond" experience.
