RE: McGriff, technique, etc...

>> I saw Jimmy McGriff in Harrisburg, PA this last November & it sounds like
the same setup that Mark saw in Boston, right down to the 2 Leslies. And yes
he had that #%*@~$+#!!! GM-1000 synth module in the XB-3 here too. Other than
a
private letter to another member of this user's group I didn't post anything
about it, but I have to agree w/ what Mark politely understated in his
posting; it was extremely annoying, especially as the night went on & it was
used again & again. He also did only one song in Harrisburg on which he
didn't use it ("I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause" in this case). The band
really epitomized the concept of the B-3 combo in that they swung like there
was no tomorrow, and thier use of dynamics was a master lesson in itself. I
hadn't heard of the guitar player before. His name was Wayne Boyd and he had
a great tone & seamless style that blended in just perfectly w/ the group, so
he deserves special mention here. Since Al Goff had mentioned in one of his
postings that Jimmy uses a Goff
rig, I hope this is just a phase he's going through because he's such a great
player he doesn't need those bells & whistles. They end up really detracting
from the whole thing. But I don't want this to sound like a McGriff flame. I
think he's a really great artist & I have tremendous respect for him. I just
hope that next time I see him it's a purely "Hammond" experience.<<

Ben:

Get use to it... Jimmy is selling his B3 and is switching to the XB-3...
Jimmy has been using MIDI for sometime now and he loves the XB-3. One of the
things that most of you haven't seen is Jimmy's old rig that Goff did a lot of
things to. He had a separate amp for the Bass as he like CLEAN bass lines.
This is do to the fact the he played bass before he played organ.

Again, Jimmy uses the 302 for Don the drummer... and we always mike the 122XB.
Matter of fact we even do a DI out of the organ.

I guess it just proves that you can not please everyone... However, Jimmy does
grow with his music.

Regards
Tom Tuson

PS - I should also mention that Jimmy is only using the GM-1000 because it
easy to deal with for now. He will be using his Kurzwiel K-2000 in the months
to come... Also, Hammond Suzuki USA doesn't have any artist deal with him. He
just likes the new organ... In Jimmy's words, "I have more control over the
XB-3 then the old B."
