I've done this mod, and have always wondered how the mod was to be
done in situ. I removed the generator from the body of the beast and
with much application of solder wick, and other solder removing
apparati, managed to clean all of the mounting lugs and completely
removed all remnants of the to-be-replaced component. Perhaps if the
old capacitor is not completely removed, but instead, merely the body
of the capactitor is clipped out, the new part could be soldered to
the leads that were left behind. New high quality capacitors are so
much smaller, and usually have smaller, more flexible leads than the
originals had. A partial replacement (using the old leads) could
conceivably give more mechanical stability than than a complete
replacement when using some of the new styles of capacitors. Just a
guess though.
