Yes.  I've done it.  Works great.  No regrets.  The no-popping stems from 
the turn on occurring at a zero-crossing of the AC line.  There has been 
mention of it in posts as recent as last week as well as an extensive 
go-round on the subject in January.  Take a look at the historical files.
