This is the first time I get to answer my own post.

Learning from all of you that this was *NOT* normal, I began to dive into
the amp. The problem turned out to be a "cruddy" 6AUG tube socket. Using
a horse hair pointed artist's brush and some non-residue cleaner did the trick.

The problem now is that the vibrato channel comes in loud & clear -- clear 
enough to tell me that the scanner needs attention. Oh well.
