Tone Generator Info

I have noted from time to time, questions about which type of
tone generator was used in this or that model. Consulting my Hammond
A,B,C,D,E,G,BV,CV,RT,B2,C2,RT2,B3,C3,RT3 Manual, I have found
information on tone generators which some may find of interest.

Please note this may not be complete, and doesn't include the
A-100, Which I feel really belongs in this family. Oh well. These
"Types" are never referred to as such, only by their properties and
attendant models. THE use of "Type" is used here only as a matter of
convenience.

Type I

Number of Wheels (notes): 91 arranged as follows:

                             12 - 2 tooth
                             12 - 4 tooth
                             12 - 8 tooth
                             12 - 16 tooth
                             12 - 32 tooth
                             12 - 64 tooth
                             12 - 128 tooth
                              7 - 192 tooth

FYI - As an assembly a 2 tooth and a 32 tooth go together, as does a
4 and a 64, a 8 and a 128, and a 16 and a 192 (Though in the last
case the wheels are not 4 octaves apart (As with all others) but 4
octaves less 5 semi-tones apart. (Note too blank wheels are
substituted for the 192 tooth wheels, because there are only 7 of
them.)

Filtering - Most all use resistance wire shunts from freqs 1 - 43, a
transformer from freqs 44 - 48, and a cap (The ones AL Goff has
replacements for) and transformer from freqs 49 - 91. Notable
exception to this rule are model A's Serial # 1 - 2178, which use
transformers only on 44 - 54.

USE:

Model A #'s : 1 - 2676 Model D #'s : 1 - 3143
Model B #'s : 4000 - 10,549 Model E #'s : 8000 - 8663
Model C #'s : 1 - 1247 Player #'s : 9000 - 9209
(Yes there was a "player" hammond made)

Type II

Number of Wheels (notes): 82 arranged as follows:

Same as above but with freqs 1 - 9 omitted.
                             Blank wheels take their place.
USE:

Model A #'s : 2677 - 2711 Model D #'s : 3144 - 17,074
Model B #'s : 10,550 - 17,074 Model E #'s : 8664 - 8739
Model C #'s : 1248 - 17,074 Model G #'s : 4101 - 7349

Type III

Number of Wheels (notes): 91 arranged as follows:

                             Same as type I, but freq's 1 - 12 now have
"Complex" wheels, which have more harmonics.

FYI - This results in the last 12 tones having greater "Clarity"

USE:

Model BV #'s : 17,075 - 29,737 Model B-2 #'s : 35,000 - 40,303
Model CV #'s : 17,075 - 30,287 Model C-2 #'s : 35,001 - 40,495
Model RT #'s : 1001 - 1201 Model RT-2 #'s : 1300 - 2150

Type IV

Number of Wheels (notes): 91 arranged as follows

Same as a Type III, the difference in this
generator is the rearrangement of its
physical structure. Filters and caps are in
                             slightly different locations. And the
generator has a narrower cover. The other
big difference is that the terminal strip is
no longer chromatic (In order). What effect
this has on tone over all, I cannot say.

USE:

Model B-2 #'s : 40304 - ? (Says "above")
Model C-2 #'s : 40460 - ? (Says "above")
Model RT-2 #'s : 2151 - ? (Says "above")

I believe this generator was used in all C/B/RT - 3's as well, but
interestingly enough, this text I have stops here, even though the
manual proper covers A-B/C/RT - 3. Go figure?

Perhaps this is one for the FAQ? And maybe one of you (HEY AL!
HELP!) can answer the blanks on this listing.
