Your answer was pretty close - though I hope that someone didn't / 
doesn't throw away good tubes just because the getter flash is 
visible(!). 

I've been doin' tubes for oh uh - 40 years... and am still learning...
That's one of the interesting things about electronics - there are very 
few rules - and even fewer who bother keeping those!
