Check this, in addition to the moving shaft of the start motor.  There
is a moving gear on the generator, it is supposed to turn freely, unless
two pins on it are engauged in a mationg plate fixed to the generator
shaft.  Make sure it moves freely and isn't stuck.  you should be able
to push it away from the start motor and it should slip toward the start
motor when released.
