The simple way is to go buy something from Keyboard Systems or one of
the other organ MIDI-ifier companies. First, go browse around the MITA
home page. Keyboard Systems sells just such a thing and I think
another company does too - optical-, or contact-keyed MIDI engine made
for retrofit into tonewheel organs.

Cheap? It's most often worked out cheaper for me in the long run to buy,
rather than design/debug and build. There's no doubt that it's simpler
that way.
