There are Hostels in the US. There is a new fancy one in Santa Monica 
(where Los Angeles hits the ocean), and two in Venice (the city just to the 
south). 

If you end up with a car, camp in campgrounds. 

Don't just travel around the US and figure you will find places to sleep. 
Been there, done that in my early '20s. When you don't plan well it can 
be a real bummer.
