My M-3 made a bip-bip-bip sound when vibrato was on, but when chorus was
selected it made a straight (non-chorus'd) sound.  This behavior was
caused by a shorted capacitor in the delay line (the first one, in my
case).  So it may not require a scanner rebuild to fix your vibrato
problem.
