Sounds to me like a lot of collected dirt and grime keeping connections from
being made and other things from turning.  Probably the problem with the C/V
is that the scanner is not turning; disassembly and a careful lube will take
care of that.  Lose wires and grime on the bus bars and prescious-metal
contacts are your other problems; most liely a good candidate for a busbar
lube job.  The grease used on the presets get quite stiff and unmanagable
after 10 or 15 years exposure and needs to be cleaned off the actuating tabs
of the preset keys and replaced with something fresh and pliable.
