This might be a "can of worms".  Did your friend, or someone else diddle
with the generator?  Sounds like all of the tonewheels at the start motor
end are not turning.  This could be a broken coupling spring, lack of oil
(unlikely), or the result of someone trying to pry the start pinion back.
The missing notes are all C's.  Remember the fractional drawbars.
