I had a similiar problem on an M3.  I used an auto cleaner/wax formula. 
There are few abrasives in the solution, and it has mineral spirits
also.  The one I used is a local brand, but any 'Color Back' car wax
should work.

The keys came out so good and smooth, I did the same treatment on my B3
and C3
