Hey, I'm glad you brought up the "song" aspect of playing. I to enjoy hearing Jimmy burn and toil but I find that my fave Hammond setting is within a great song. Billy Preston is a great example, to go from the Stones to a Lyle Lovett/Al Green session, and to sound at home in both situations is a admirable thing. The tone of the Hammond and Leslie is the biggest factor to me, not necessarily the chops. The Subdudes are another good example of "what is hip", no pretension there, just americana. Which brings me to Leon Russell. I've had the pleasure of opening for him twice now and although the years and technology have tempered his sound he is still one of the baddest! I may be only 23 but I know where the mother lode hides, or at least I have a map! Yes, Booker T is a king and again he is another who can fit in in any musical enviornment(check out Fat City by Shawn Colvin) and that is my main aspiration as a musician. Great teachers make it easier. Thanks for the time, all! Sincerely, Don
