(Sorry about that first mail)

I personally don't think busier is a word that could be
synonamous with capable....Just because you can play lots-o-stuff really
fast, it don't mean you are any more/less capable than a person who plays
less stuff and a little slower...It is just a different approach to
different styles of music..The best example I could relate to is Thelonious
Monk...Playing burning bop licks or any of Trane's stuff on a RB ballad or
whatever would be very inapropriate to the style unless you were actually
playing any bop tunes or Countdown or 26-2 etc...But then again some
people
seem to really dig that "out of context" thing....
Whatever the reason, my two cents worth of "hip" definitely leans to
Booker.

Yeah, I tend to agree. We (or at least I), tend to get overwhelmed by chops.
The older I get, the more I want to be able to make a statement with as few
notes as possible. Wayne Shorter once said that he wants to be able to make
the listener cry by playing just one note...
Maybe you've all the heard the story of Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis:
Herbie went to Miles to say "Miles, I just don't feel like there'e enough for
me to play". (Apparently meaning the music was "crowded"). Miles said to
him, "Well then LAY BACK, M***F***! You just told yourself what to do"!
Brilliant! If you think you don't have enough room to play, play
*even less*.
Speaking of Miles: R.I.P. Tony Williams. My favorite drummer ever. I
can't believe he's gone. A true innovator has fallen.
